31 May 2012 - In Canada, an estimated 83% of new HIV infections in 2008 occurred through sexual transmission, either among men who have sex with men (47%) or heterosexual men and women (36%). Elton John AIDS Foundation Gives Away $850K 1st Round for 2012
May 30, 2012 - The Elton John AIDS Foundation just announced its first round of donations for 2012. EJAF is the most organized and hands on of the all the AIDS groups, with lots of transparency and very little over head or calling of attention to itself.
In this round, they gave $700,000 to AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund), 100,000 to the Names Project (Quilt in the Capital), and $50,000 to the SERO Project, HIV is not a crime.

Bionor Pharma announced today that the first study of Bionor Pharma's Vacc-C5 is now approved to begin at Oslo University Hospital. Vacc-C5 is a therapeutic HIV vaccine developed to slow down or stop induction of immune hyperactivation, a feature that drives the production of HIV and is damaging the immune system, leading to AIDS. NIH Scientists Identify New HIV-Inhibiting Protein
May 29, 2012 - Potential Role in HIV Treatment and Prevention under Study
WHAT: Scientists have identified a new HIV-suppressing protein in the blood of people infected with the virus. In laboratory studies, the protein, called CXCL4 or PF-4, binds to HIV such that it cannot attach to or enter a human cell. The research was led by Paolo Lusso, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Section of Viral Pathogenesis in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of NIH.

25 May 2012 - Starting HIV treatment with a CD4 cell count below 350 cells/mm3 may increase the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease, US research published in AIDS suggests. Investigators found that men who started therapy with a CD4 cell count below this threshold had much poorer endothelial function, a key measure of vascular health, than individuals who started treatment when their CD4 cell count was above 350 cells/mm3.

24 May 2012 - Researchers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, have reported that some people in that city are finding out that they are HIV positive late in the course of this infection. In a 2010 report, nearly 50% of people had their first HIV-positive test result when they sought care for a life-threatening infection.

Newly discovered breast milk antibodies help neutralize HIV
22-May-2012 - Antibodies that help to stop the HIV virus have been found in breast milk. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center isolated the antibodies from immune cells called B cells in the breast milk of infected mothers in Malawi, and showed that the B cells in breast milk can generate neutralizing antibodies that may inhibit the virus that causes AIDS.

Vancouver International AIDS Candlelight Memorial - May 20th 2012
May 22, 2012 - VANCOUVER, BC: - AIDS Vancouver, along with 16 partner agencies, held a beautiful and solemn AIDS Candlelight Memorial on Sunday, May 20, 2012, with over 60 people attending the event in spite of the rainy weather.
This was the 29th Vancouver International AIDS Candlelight Memorial and the theme is "Promoting Health and Dignity Together". The International coalition of 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries, all aim to raise awareness around HIV and to promote respect for the human rights of people living with HIV everywhere.

There are little systematic data available on the socioeconomic needs of Persons Living With HIV/AIDS (PHA) in BC, therefore the impact of housing instability on the health outcomes of this population is not fully understood in this context. Findings from the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS-based Longitudinal Investigations into Supportive and Ancillary Health Services (LISA) study suggest that 32% of people accessing antiretroviral therapy in BC are unstably housed. Of those, 83% live in, or frequent, the city of Vancouver.

Study confirms early elevated HIV infection risk in some step study participants who received vaccine; risk decreased over time
SEATTLE - May 7, 2012 - After about 18 months, risk level decreased to that of volunteers who received a placebo
A long-term follow-up analysis of participants in the Step Study, an international HIV-vaccine trial, has confirmed that certain subgroups of male study participants were at higher risk of becoming infected after receiving the experimental vaccine compared to those who received a placebo. The vaccine used in the study did not contain the HIV virus, but it did contain HIV genes which were delivered to cells using a vector that employed a type of cold virus known as adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5).

Johns Hopkins Establishes New Center for AIDS Research
May 4, 2012 - Johns Hopkins University has been awarded $15 million over the next five years from the National Institutes of Health to establish the new Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). CFAR will support more than 180 HIV investigators from the University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and other schools. A major priority for CFAR will be to address Baltimore's HIV epidemic in addition to training new investigators and conducting international research.

While the battle against HIV/AIDS attracts more donor funding globally than all other diseases combined, it has not diverted attention from fighting unrelated afflictions -- such as malaria, measles and malnutrition -- and may be improving health services overall in targeted countries, according to a study on Rwanda published today in the May 2012 edition of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

May 1, 2012 - New York, NY, - In public comments submitted this week, a group of 14 leading HIV/AIDS and health organizations stated their support for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of emtricitabine/ tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF/FTC or Truvada) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection in adult men and women. Their comments, submitted in advance of a May 10 FDA Advisory Committee meeting, pointed to compelling evidence on the efficacy of TDF/FTC as PrEP and highlighted the unique potential of this intervention to help slow the HIV epidemic in the US.
