NEW YORK, NY NOVEMBER 1, 2011 - The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) announces
the appointment to its Board of Directors of Mary Tydings, a Managing Director at Russell Reynolds Associates, one of the world's largest
executive recruiting and assessment firms. Tydings joins a diverse group of 16 directors from 10 countries with backgrounds in finance,
vaccinology, international development, academia and HIV treatment and prevention, that oversees IAVI's progress and shapes its
long-term strategy.
A 20-year veteran of the executive search business, Tydings currently serves as the Not-For-Profit Global Sector Leader at
Russell Reynolds Associates. In this role, she works with major national and international foundations, non-governmental organizations
and cultural institutions to recruit chief executives and to advise directors on issues of governance, succession planning, executive
transition and board structure. She has recruited leaders for some of the nation's largest foundations, as well as for leading
non-profits in a variety of fields. Tydings plays a pivotal role in the firm, as she leads the Washington, D.C., office and
has been a member of both the Executive and Investment Committees. Tydings also has received the firm's highest honor, the
President's Award, which recognizes individuals of the highest caliber who embodied the firm's values by focusing on
teamwork, serving as a role model and nurturing a collaborative culture.
"It is a pleasure to welcome Mary to IAVI's Board of Directors," said Margaret McGlynn, IAVI's President & Chief
Executive Officer. "Her considerable experience in executive-level recruitment will no doubt be an important asset to the Board and
to the organization as a whole. Her advice will be invaluable to our efforts to ensure that our human resource strategies effectively
support our strategic plan and the needs of the organization at this important time in our evolution. I look forward to working
closely with her to make certain that IAVI is well positioned to address the needs of the field and hasten progress toward the
creation of an effective vaccine against HIV."
"I am honored to be presented with the opportunity to serve on IAVI's Board," Tydings said. "I look forward to
working with IAVI to continue the research needed to create a vaccine that prevents HIV. For more than 30 years, HIV has been a scourge
that has infected more than 60 million people and claimed nearly 30 million lives, and I am excited to contribute to IAVI's vision of a
world without AIDS."
Tydings began her career in journalism, spending several years as a reporter and editor for the Mutual Broadcasting System
before joining the Larry King Show as a producer in 1981. While there, Tydings won a prestigious Peabody Award for her work on a segment
highlighting the toll of teenage drinking and driving. She also worked in the White House during the Clinton administration in the
Office of Presidential Personnel from 1992-1993. Tydings is a member of the Board of the Campaign for the Prevention of Teen and
Unplanned Pregnancy, and she is a former president of the Joseph Davies Foundation, as well as a former member of the Board of
the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. She holds a B.A. from Bowdoin College.
