September 24, 2011 - The Global Network of People living with HIV mourns
the passing of Marcel van Soest, Executive Director of the World AIDS Campaign
. Words are not enough to express our shock and grief at the loss of our friend, colleague and fellow activist.
Marcel has been the Executive Director of the World AIDS Campaign since 2004,
expanding it to an international organisation with offices in Amsterdam and Cape Town. Over the years GNP+ and the World AIDS Campaign have
worked closely together on different projects - a partnership brokered by Marcel's leadership in championing the rights of people living
with HIV and the GIPA principle: the greater and more meaningful involvement of people living with HIV in HIV programme and policy development.
Marcel was a passionate leader with a vision to bring together all of civil society to make the HIV response
better and more inclusive.
Since 2009 WAC and GNP+ have shared offices in Amsterdam. As a co-worker, Marcel always had a friendly word for
his colleagues. He exuded a great calmness, and approached people honestly and respectfully.
Marcel van Soest passed away on Wednesday 21 September 2011 in Amsterdam. GNP+ and its staff offer condolences to his partner
Fred, his family, colleagues, friends and his loved ones. We will miss him.
