July 15, 2011 - Rome, Italy - The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) will be
highlighting the latest research on issues relating to children and HIV at the 2011 International AIDS Society (IAS) conference in Rome.
The sixth International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment, and Prevention, held July 17 - 20,
is this year's most prominent research conference on global HIV/AIDS. The Foundation will have nearly thirty representatives in attendance
from the various countries in which it works, including the U.S., Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa,
Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The Foundation will be presenting on the issues of pediatric AIDS and the health of HIV-positive mothers, sharing its own clinical and
implementation research findings, and participating in a variety of sessions, including:
- IAS-sponsored Media Training & Briefing (Saturday, July 16)
- Foundation-sponsored satellite session on community involvement in HIV initiatives (Sunday, July 17)
- IAS- and UNICEF-sponsored satellite session on scaling up PMTCT (Sunday, July 17)
- Session on HIV and the transition from childhood to adolescence (Tuesday, July 19)
- Oral abstracts on HIV-free survival of HIV-exposed infants (Tuesday, July 19) and integrating reproductive health and HIV services (Wednesday, July 20)
- Workshops on how to conduct operational research (Tuesday, July 19), and specifically how to conduct operations research on implementing the 2010 WHO guidelines on PMTCT and infant feeding (Wednesday, July 20)
- Twenty-two poster presentations, including the release of data from a study on the feasibility of integrating rapid syphilis tests with PMTCT services in Uganda and Zambia (Tuesday, July 19)
