IAS Presidential Award Honours Prof. Eric Goosby for his Long-term Commitment and Leadership in the Response to HIV
25 July 2014 (Geneva, Switzerland) - The International AIDS Society (IAS) honours
Prof. Eric Goosby, Professor at the University of California, San Francisco with the IAS Presidential Award for his long-term
commitment and leadership working in the HIV field at local, national and international levels. As Global AIDS Ambassador
in the U.S. Department of State under the Obama administration, his leadership helped turn the emergency focus of the
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)
to one of sustainability enabling countries to enhance their capacity to govern and manage their own HIV and related public
health programmes. Prof. Goosby greatly impacted the epidemic by increasing access to antiretroviral treatment in
countries most affected by the epidemic.
Outgoing and incoming IAS Presidents, Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, and Prof. Chris Beyrer, will present the award to
Prof Eric Goosby during the Closing Session of the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) on 25 July. The session
begins at 15:30 in Plenary Room 2, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
"I am very happy that IAS recognizes today with this award the unfailing engagement of Prof. Goosby in fighting
the AIDS epidemic. His exemplary career is the one of a man truly dedicated to work for the benefit of all patients wherever
they are in the world" said Françoise Barré-Sinoussi.
Inaugurated in 2010, the IAS Presidential Award recognizes the achievements of individuals who demonstrate a long history
of leadership and excellence as a pioneer or advocate at the forefront of the response to HIV and AIDS. The award
highlights an individual's contribution that results in increased knowledge, skills, creative solutions or
evidence-based policies and programmes to enhance the global response to HIV.
Prof. Eric Goosby started his early career caring for AIDS patients at the San Francisco General Hospital after graduating from
the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He witnessed the devastating effects of AIDS in the early years when no
treatment was available. This experience stayed with him when he was called to Washington to guide programmes to fight
the epidemic within the USA where as National AIDS Policy Director in the White House convened the Guidelines
for Antiretroviral Therapy for Adults, Adolescents and Pregnant Women. His appointment as
United States Ambassador and Global AIDS Coordinator gave him
the opportunity to impact the HIV response on a global scale by guiding the international HIV strategy of the USA and
directing PEPFAR, the largest national programme to respond to HIV internationally.
