Sign-on Statement: Support Condoms at the Commission on the Status of Women
Join us in raising the visibility of female and male condoms at the CSW!
During the first two weeks of March, government delegates, U.N. officials, and civil society advocates will be in New York City for the 54th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
At this meeting governments across the world will recommit to the Beijing Platform for Action put forth at the 1995 World Conference on Women, which called for advancing women's human rights, sexual and reproductive health, and gender equality.
Fifteen years after Beijing, women continue to be acutely affected by HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancy, and maternal mortality. Today we only have two dual protection methods available that prevent HIV/STIs and unintended pregnancy:
female and male condoms. Female condoms are of vital importance in that they offer women a tool to initiate protection and to negotiate condom use. However, female and male condoms remain inaccessible to many women and individuals who wish to
use them, despite their importance in achieving women's health and rights.
World leaders need to know how urgently women and men need access to these critical prevention methods. The Center for Health and Gender Equity's Prevention Now! Campaign, in
conjunction with the Comprehensive Condom Programming (CCP) Civil Society Advocacy Working Group, will circulate a civil society statement on the importance of female and male condoms among government officials and NGO representatives at the CSW. The statement is copied below and can
be found here: www.genderhealth.org/pubs/civil_society_condoms_statement_signon.pdf
