Research and Markets: HIV Diagnostics Market in India - Prevention to Be Scaled up in Population of 1.14 Billion

October 31, 2011 - DUBLIN - Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "HIV Diagnostics Market - 2010" report to their offering.

HIV stands out as a highly lucrative and expanding market for diagnostics because of the close integration of diagnostics in day-to-day disease diagnosis, management, and drug selection. HIV was first identified in India in 1986 in Chennai, shortly after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) initiated surveillance for HIV. Surveillance was later taken over by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), set up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India is planning to scale up prevention of HIV to avoid having to spend an increasing share of its health budget on treatment of AIDS patients, according to the World Bank and other agencies. India has over 2.5 million AIDS patients currently. India spends about 5 percent of its $5.4 billion healthcare budget on treating AIDS patients. India may have to spend $1.8 billion by 2020, about 7 percent of the total health expenditure, the World Bank said.

HIV Diagnostics Market - 2010 by eprobe Research Pvt Ltd explores the consequences and opportunities arising from this situation.

The current population of India is 1.14 billion, and with a growth rate of 1.7%, India will surpass China to become the world's most populous country around 2030. For diagnostic manufacturers, this enormous market is just now being recognized as a high-growth area.

Blood screening has emerged as a growing market for nucleic acid based tests. This is mainly attributable to mandatory testing for blood donations initiated by countries such as the United States for HIV-1 and HCV.

It is expected that the global IVD market will grow at a CAGR of around 9% during 2010-2012. United States HIV/AIDS Testing market is one of the most highly developed and regulated markets in the world. The HIV/AIDS confirmatory tests market in the region is projected to reach US$32 million by 2015. To date, Abbott has donated more than eight million rapid HIV tests to prevention programs throughout the developing world.
