Oral Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
Potential advantages and challenges to comprehensive HIV prevention programs in Canada

Dec. 2, 2010 - CATIE, the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development, the Canadian AIDS Society and the Canadian Public Health Association are pleased to invite you to a webinar session to review the concept of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and the recently released results of the iPrEx trial and to discuss broader implications for Canadian communities.
Part 1: An introduction to PrEP and iPrEx results (2:00 to 2:45)
A 30- minute presentation by James Wilton of CATIE, followed by 15 minutes of Q and A. This presentation is recommended for participants who do not have a good understanding of PrEP or the iPrEx results.
Part 2: Discussion on the implications for Canada (2:45 to 3:30)
An in-depth discussion facilitated by San Patten to address the benefits and challenges of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and potential implications of recent trial results.
You are invited to attend Part 1 and/or Part 2. Those who do not already have a basic understanding of PrEP and the iPrEx results are encouraged to attend Part 1. If you answer no to any of the following questions, we recommend that you join us for Part 1.
- Do you know what PrEP is?
- Do you know the status of PrEP research?
- Are you familiar with the results of the iPrEx study?
This webinar session aims to highlight the importance of a comprehensive HIV prevention package that integrates biomedical as well as behavioural and structural components. In light of recently released iPrEx results, participants will discuss issues such as:
messaging around risk compensation associated with partially effective new prevention technologies
adherence
the ethics of ARV use for prevention
off-label and community PrEP use
drug resistance and the necessity for pre-testing of HIV
need for counseling in the context of criminalization of transmission, and
stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV in Canada.
