HIVictorious receives a $6500 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation
September 2007 - [Madison, WI] - HIVictorious, Inc., a local non-profit whose mission is to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in Wisconsin and throughout the nation, recently received a $6500 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to continue its successful "What If It Were You?" poster project. The contest, which is open to students at participating high schools, is designed to encourage adolescents to acknowledge and reject existing stigmas surrounding HIV by responding to questions such as "What if you were HIV positive?" Students have the opportunity to design a poster that challenges stereotypes and prizes are awarded to the first and second place winners.
HIVictorious will use the grant to fund a second round of the "What If It Were You?" poster contest. According to Bob Bowers, the founder and president of HIVictorious and a 24 year survivor of HIV/AIDS, "the generous grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation supports an essential component of our ambitious goal to end the continued tragedy of racism, homophobia, and HIV in Wisconsin by providing students with a forum to gain knowledge about HIV prevention and show compassion for those infected or affected with HIV."
In addition to the "What If It Were You?" project, the organization raises awareness through the public speaking of Bowers and other volunteers who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. With these programs and the range of resources available on its website, HIVictorious strives to meet its mission of education and prevention.
The Wisconsin AIDS Fund, a grantmaking organization that was established as part of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and the Johnson & Pabst LGBT Humanity Fund both contributed to the grant HIVictorious received. With the help of these generous donors, the "What If It Were You" project will be open to students at four Madison-area high schools this fall.
