It began quietly enough with several curious cases
of a killer pneumonia affecting gay men in California
and New York. First thought to be nothing
more than a local phenomenon, it wasn't long before
the strange new mystery disease graduated to become
a global epidemic.
Blindsided and totally in the dark about this new health threat, the
international medical community grappled with a growing number of
patients while public health officials scrambled to contain the deadly
disease. Meanwhile, amid rising hysteria about how the disease is
spread, body counts mounted, and even before it was given an official
name, thousands of people worldwide, mostly homosexual men, were
dead from the mysterious illness.
