GMHC Responds to Secretary Clinton
New plan follows series of meetings with advocates from across the nation
August 3, 2016 - New York, New York - GMHC released the following statement in response to Secretary Clinton’s newest HIV and AIDS action plan. The plan was released yesterday and comes after a series of meetings a coalition of over 70 organizations and advocates from across the country have had with candidates to push forward the national conversation on HIV and AIDS. This coalition includes GMHC CEO Kelsey Louie.
STATEMENT BY GMHC CEO KELSEY LOUIE:
With 50,000 new HIV infections across the country every year, voters deserve to know where each candidate stands on policies relating to ending the epidemic. That is why back in January, GMHC released the results of our presidential survey, which was sent to the 18 candidates running at the time. The purpose of the survey was not to endorse a candidate, but rather to hear each candidates' polices on ending the epidemic and giving each of them equal opportunity to communicate these positions to the public.
Last week Daniel Driffin become the first openly HIV positive individual to address a major party convention in since 2000. Yesterday, Secretary Clinton became the only presidential candidate this election cycle to lay out a series of specific policy proposals to end AIDS as an epidemic in the United States and around the globe. She pledged to do this by expanding access to critical programs and services, removing disparities and barriers to accessing care, and ending stigma and discrimination.
Her ambitious plan also includes convening an “End the Epidemic” working group. As a vital source of information on HIV and AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, GMHC fully supports measures like this that effectively engage AIDS experts, advocates, and stakeholders. There is no better way to create an ambitious, strategic and realistic plan to end the epidemic than to engage those on the ground. GMHC will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that HIV and AIDS prevention, care and advocacy is a priority for any serious contender running for office.”
