TruEvolution to Host AIDS Advocacy Night at UCR
Organization working to educate Riverside community on truth about HIV and AIDS in America
April 20, 2015 - Let’s face it — most people think of AIDS as a problem only developing countries, specifically
Sub-Saharan African countries, face. But, there are approximately 35 million people worldwide,
according to the World Health Organization, living with HIV — and in Riverside County there
are nearly 5,000 people living with the virus. In order to better educate our community
on the infectious and sometimes deadly virus, TruEvolution is inviting everyone to
this year’s AIDS Advocacy Night. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 23
from 6–9:30 p.m. at the UCR Highlander Union Building Outdoor Area.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 1.2 million people are
living with HIV in the United States. If you break-down the statistics by looking at race and
ethnicity — the CDC reports that African Americans are the most affected by HIV. In 2010,
African Americans only made up 12% of the U.S. population, but made up 44% of all new
HIV infections. Also, according to the CDC, Latinos are strongly affected — they
make up 17% of the nation’s population, but make up 21% of new HIV infections.
Given those statistics, the AIDS Advocacy night is a chance to do something about it, said CEO and
Executive Director of TruEvolution, Gabe Maldonado. “Come out and take part in combatting the
epidemic in Riverside County by becoming aware of the facts, connecting with community
resources, and knowing your status by getting tested,” he said.
TruEvolution, the organization hosting the event, is dedicated to fighting for LGBT justice, and
advocating for the prevention and elimination of HIV/AIDS in America. Folks planning the event will
be using arts and performance like spoken word, theatrical skits, and dance performance as a tool
to promote prevention and wellness.
