IAPAC President/CEO José M. Zuniga and UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at UNAIDS Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
June 24, 2013 - GENEVA, Switzerland - The International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC) and
the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) have signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) focused on expanding access to HIV testing, care, treatment, and support services globally.
"IAPAC is committed to work with UNAIDS on innovative ways in which to expand access to HIV care and treatment in a way
that takes into account the importance of optimizing the treatment cascade. In doing so, we will address the testing, linkage to
care, and long-term engagement in care barriers that attenuate the full benefit of antiretroviral therapy - both for
therapeutic and preventative effect," said José M. Zuniga, IAPAC President/CEO.
UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé said, "Partnerships such as this are extremely important and help advance global
efforts to expand access to treatment and care for people living with HIV. We look forward to working together with IAPAC improve the
lives of people living with HIV."
The three objectives of the IAPAC-UNAIDS MOU include:
sharing information from and with providers of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services related to best practices in scaling up testing, care, and treatment;
working together to address gaps in the HIV treatment cascade with an emphasis on testing more, treating more, and retaining more people in care; and
jointly coordinating meetings, sessions, and/or consultations that address expanded access to HIV testing, care, and treatment and the role of the community, including community health providers, in achieving these objectives.
In fulfilling these objectives, IAPAC and UNAIDS will: exchange and disseminate information and lessons learned
from the field related to challenges and opportunities in scaling up HIV testing, care, and treatment globally;
support efforts to address gaps in the HIV treatment cascade by working together to promote evidence-based approaches, including recommendations and tools, to assist HIV care providers and other stakeholders in implementing interventions to test more, treat more, and retain more people in care;
encourage cooperation at country level between UNAIDS country offices and IAPAC members and promote the involvement of IAPAC members and partners in the delivery of multisectoral programs to expand access to HIV testing and treatment;
collaborate and provide high-level participation in support of joint efforts, including summits and consultations, to expand access to HIV testing and treatment; and
partner in coordinating information sessions addressing the role and experience of community health providers in building local capacity to expand access to HIV testing care and treatment.
