First Fatal Alaskapox Case Reported

Alaska reported the first known severe case of Alaskapox virus (AKPV) resulting in hospitalization and death, according to a bulletin released by the Alaska Section of Epidemiology (SOE).
“Alaskapox is a rare disease and not something we see with any frequency,” Joe McLaughlin, MD, the state epidemiologist and chief of the SOE at the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, in Anchorage, told Infectious Disease Special Edition. Until recently, “we’ve had less than one case identified in Alaska per year since the virus was first discovered.”
Until December 2023, all reported infections occurred in residents of the Fairbanks area and involved self-limiting illness consisting of a localized rash and lymphadenopathy.
