UNAIDS — On our way to Zimbabwe for World AIDS Day and ICASA!
First, what’s happening on World AIDS Day in Zimbabwe?
First, what’s happening on World AIDS Day in Zimbabwe?
All roads will lead to Chinotimba Stadium in Victoria Falls for the commemorations of World AIDS Day. On 1 December, the Executive Director of UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima will commemorate the 40 million lives lost to AIDS and highlight the critical role of communities following the powerful launch of the 2023 UNAIDS World AIDS Day Report ‘Let Communities Lead’.
In the afternoon, Ms Byanyima will visit a community led initiative enabling people most affected by HIV, including sex workers, access health services.
Now, UNAIDS at ICASA
The 22nd International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (ICASA) is taking place in Harare, Zimbabwe, between 4 and 9 December 2023. This year ICASA brings together Africa’s leaders, scientists, activists and communities around the theme AIDS IS NOT OVER: address inequalities, accelerate inclusion and innovation.
The Executive Director of UNAIDS will lead the UNAIDS delegation to ICASA. She will participate in the ICASA High-level meeting of First Ladies in Africa on the elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV and the ICASA high-level meeting of Africa’s Finance Ministers on domestic financing and the sustainability of the AIDS response. The Executive Director will open the ICASA Community Village, and she will have key moments with community leaders of the HIV response from Zimbabwe and across Africa.
UNAIDS key messages at ICASA
- Harness the power of grassroots AIDS communities across the African continent to lead the way in the response to HIV
- Ensure sufficient and sustainable funding to protect the gains made against HIV and to sustain the gains beyond 2030.
- Address the inequalities that are in the way of ending AIDS by 2030 everywhere in the world.
- Follow the science and innovation, the data, and the evidence.

For her passionate advocacy for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities including the LGBTQ+ community, Ms Byanyima will be awarded the ‘Most Outspoken Ally of the Year’ award by the Global Black Gay Men Connect African Men Health and Rights, during a ceremony on the last day of ICASA. A well-deserved recognition! |
